BOX 1: Stephen Kumalo receives a letter from Theophilus Msimangu, another priest, telling him he needs to come to Johannesburg because his sister, Gertrude, is sick.
BOX 2: Stephen Kumalo quickly packs his bags to leave for Johannesburg to find his sister, brother, and son. At the train station he fears that he will get ont he wrong train. Once he arrives in Johannesburg, what he thinks is a kind man offers Kumalo to get him a ticket. Not knowing the man was a thief, Kumalo gives the man his money. He is told only a few seconds after he escapes that the man was a freud.
BOX 3: Msimangu takes Stephen Kumalo to Claremont, where his sister Gertrude and her son live. He is shocked by the shappiness, dirtiness, the closeness of the houses, and the filth in the streets. He knocks on Gertrude's door and she answers. They talk for a long time about how sadness and the sickness of Claremont has taken over her. They agree that she should come back with Stephen Kumalo to live a good life.
BOX 4: After Stephen Kumalo finds his brother John, he tries to tell him about Absalom, Stephen Kumalo's son's whereabouts. He goes through a series of houses where Absalom has stayed to try and find him. They all lead him to a reformatory where Absalom was just released because he has a pregnant girlfriend. Stephen goes to see her, hoping Absalom would be there, only to find the girl alone and abandoned by his son.
BOX 5: Stephen Kumalo gets a call from the prison. They have found Absalom. He has been put in jail, along with Stephen Kumalo's brother's son, Tixo, for murdering a good white man while entering his house to steal. John is trying to get a lawyer for Tixo to plea that he was never there. Absalom confessed that he pulled the trigger out of fear.
BOX 6: Stephen Kumalo goes to visit the girl (Absalom's girlfriend) to make sure that she wants to marry his son. He hurts her my asking her difficult questions for a sixteen year old girl to answer. She tells him that she greatly wants to marry his son. Stephen Kumalo brings her back to where he is staying in Johannesburg for her to come back with him to live in Ndotsheni.
