In the book Cry The Beloved Country the main character, Steven Kumalo, looks for his sister, Gertrude. He finds her in a very run down area of Johannesburg called Claremont. Claremont is a very shabby, the houses are close together, and the streets are dirty. The picture to the left is Gertrude's apartment. It is very unsafe in Claremont, so the windows are boarded and doors are locked.
