Football or,
soccer, is the most popular sport in South Africa, particularly played by
blacks. The National Football League is
nicknamed Bafana Bafana (meaning the boys, the boys). In 2010, South Africa hosted the FIFA World
Cup.
Cricket is the second most popular sport in South Africa, and is mainly played by the Britain people and Indian South African communities, although it is now followed by members of all races. The national cricket team is nicknamed The Proteas. South Africa hosted the Cricket World Cup in 2003, and in 2007, they lost in the semi-finals against Australia.
The Rugby Union is also very popular, especially among people that are mainly Afrikan. The national rugby union team called the Springboks which have had a great amount of success since the early 20th Century. They have two Rugby World Cup victories in 1995 & 2007.
South Africa also plays many other popular sports such as: boxing, hockey, tennis, golf, surfing, netball and running.
